carinsureuk types

Here we aim to give you a simple guide to the different types of UK car insurance policies that are available, so that you know which sort is right for your needs. Remember, however, that this is only a rough guide and that every policy will vary from provider to provider - check your terms and conditions thoroughly.

Third party
Third party UK car insurance policies are the lowest level of car insurance that is permitted in the UK, third party car insurance will basically protect you against liability to other people. This means that, should you be involved in an accident, your third party policy would cover you for any costs you owed the third party. Sometimes third party is a preferred option for driver whose cars have a low monetary value.

Third party, fire and theft
These types of UK car insurance policies offer the same cover as third party insurance, but with additional cover for the insured vehicle. In addition to liability, you will also be protected for costs arising from incidents of fire, theft or vandalism.

Fully comprehensive
Comprehensive car insurance is the highest level of cover that you can get, and accordingly is the most extensive. As well as the protection offered by the lower levels of car insurance you will also have protection for things like accidental damage to your own car, windscreen damage, cover for personal possessions left within your car, car audio equipment, medical expenses, new car replacement, and more. Read fully your terms and conditions to see exactly what you are covered for.

Additional extras

As well as these main types of UK car insurance policies, there are also a number of additional extras that you can use to extend your level of cover.

Breakdown recovery - This type of insurance will get you out of all kinds of trouble should your vehicle break down on the road. Cover will vary from provider to provider, but usually breakdown recovery will provide you with roadside assistance, recovery services for your vehicle, repair and a replacement vehicle.

Uninsured loss recovery - This additional extra will protect you for any legal costs that would be involved should you happen to collide with an uninsured driver; someone who is driving illegally. Lengthy court procedures can result from such an occurrence so uninsured loss recovery is a useful thing to have.
